Tradies throws a Lifeline to those in trouble PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010 22:11

Major sponsor of Elouera, Tradies supports the Lifeline Sutherland Book Fair.

A record 10,000 books with a potential resale value of more than $20,000 donated via Tradies are expected to go on sale at the annual Lifeline Sutherland Book Fair this weekend (July 10 & 11).

The book fair raises money for Lifeline’s telephone counselling program and will be held at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre from 9:30am-5pm.

The Tradies has been a fundamental part of Lifeline’s long-term strategy in the Sutherland Shire donating in excess of $275,000 towards Lifeline Sutherland & Sydney since 2002.

Major corporate support from the Tradies Group has ensured that over 8000 calls to Lifeline are responded to by telephone counsellors from the Sutherland sub centre each year. Lifelines 24hr call centre in Sylvania was established with $70,000 in part donated and in part raised by Tradies in 2003. In May of this year, Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland answered the highest number of calls to Lifeline out of 42 Lifeline centres Australia wide.

It is perhaps no surprise the Sutherland Shire is responding to this need with the book fair growing 150 percent in the last four years. Last year 60,000 books went on sale, raising $170,000 for Lifeline Sutherland & Sydney.

Mr Gardner said they had been inundated with donations this year and Tradies at Gymea, which has collected books in the lead up to the event, had provided much-needed help to organisers.

Tradies funding over the years has enabled Lifeline to purchase new equipment, train greater numbers of telephone counselors and provide them with supervision and ongoing skills development.

“We are incredibly grateful to Tradies for their financial and practical support.  This support helps us to ensure that someone is always available to answer calls from Australians in need” said Penny Mayson, Manager, Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland.

Last year the book fair attracted large numbers of people and raised $66,000.

Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland is part of Wesley Mission which established the first Lifeline in 1963.
