Education & Training

We are keen for new members to complete their Bronze Medallion or Surf Rescue Certificate to bolster our patrol numbers.

We also encourage existing members to increase their skills in the areas of Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew persons/Drivers, Senior First Aid, Spinal Management or Advanced Emergency Care to fill specialist positions on patrols.  For existing members interested in furthering their surf life saving education, follow the links below to see Elouera SLSC upcoming education course dates and to examine some possible development pathways to enhance your surf life saving involvement.

Bronze Medallion

To undertake your Bronze Medallion you must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the commencement of the course.

The course will run over a 7-8 week period and will include 2, 2-hour sessions per week, one being a theory session which is held on a week night and the other being a weekend morning were practical components of the course are undertaken.

During the course subjects that are covered include: aquatic rescue, patrolling techniques, passing radio messages, CPR and use of defibrillators, basic first aid, spinal management and many other topics.

At the completion of the course an assessment will be carried out, where candidates will demonstrate to Assessors the skills that have been attained during the course. Successful candidates will be awarded with their Bronze Medallion along with a nationally recognized Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).

SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate)

The Surf Rescue Certificate can be undertaken by anyone who is 13 years of age but not older than 15. SRC is the bridging course for Nippers before they undertake their Bronze Medallion.

The course runs at the same time as the Bronze Medallion (see Bronze Medallion course dates above), candidates will undertake the same topics with the exception of spinal management and use of radios.

By completing the Surf Rescue Certificate candidates have a greater understanding of the topics when it comes time for them to commence their Bronze Medallion.

Other Awards

After members complete their Bronze Medallion they can look into doing other aquatic rescue courses like driving or crewing inflatable rescue boats, advanced search and rescue techniques and eventually working their way towards the rescue watercraft operators certificate and be able to patrol on the Surf Lifesaving Jet Ski.

Whilst Surf Lifesavers work within an aquatic environment there are other non-water related courses they can carry out. These include: beach management, advanced resuscitation techniques, spinal management, first aid and advanced emergency care.

The wonderful thing about undertaking courses through Surf Lifesaving is the skills you learn you cannot only use on the beach whilst you’re patrolling but use them in your day-to-day life.

Elouera’s Education and Training team is made up of very dedicated, experienced and friendly Trainers and Assessors who strive to see every candidate succeed.
