Elouera SLSC Newsletter: January 2023

Thursday 19 January 2023

President’s Welcome

I'd firstly like to start by welcoming everyone back after the new year. I hope you all had a great Christmas, and are having an excellent start to 2023.

A big thank you to those who volunteered on Christmas day, I know for most this is a time to spend with family. Elouera's Board of Management really appreciates you going the extra mile to ensure we had numbers on the beach.

It was an extremely busy period over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. We had a number of significant rescues both on and off the beach. I'd like to congratulate and thank everyone for their efforts, you've all once again continued to support Elouera's core role in keeping the community safe.

As the weather starts to get warmer (and finally start to look like summer) please ensure that we remain diligent when on patrol.

Whilst we have a responsibility to look after the health and safety of the community, it's just as important that we do the same for ourselves and fellow members.

One key area that Surf Life Saving Sydney wants to focus on improving this year is health and safety. Being the Work Health & Safety Officer for Elouera, and Surf Life Saving Sydney I'm always open to ideas of how we can improve in these areas, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the beach, and a big second half of the season.

Cameron Simpson
President

Forever grateful

As some of you might be aware, there was an incident at Bianchini’s café this month where a 29 year old female suffered a serious medical episode and was in need of urgent medical care.

If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of one of our members to provide the defibrillator, the collaborative effort of Council lifeguards and an off-duty firefighter, this story could have ended in dire consequences. In actual fact, all of the efforts combined, saved this woman’s life.

We understand that Sutherland Shire Councils Mayor and Bianchini’s café owner, Cr Carmelo Pesce, has since spoken to the patient’s mother. She of course couldn’t be more grateful for the care that was given to her daughter.

An important factor in the patient’s survival was early access to Elouera’s defibrillator and oxygen equipment. Minutes really matter in these situations and the difference between her survival and others less fortunate is the prompt actions by those present who have given her the best chance of surviving this unfortunate incident.

It’s a tough story to recount, and one of many that has unfortunately happened on our beaches through this and many seasons, but one that bears a vital message – first aid saves lives.

This is a timely reminder to all our members to make sure that your skills are up to date and to always refresh them if needed.

Make sure you check out our education web page to find out what’s coming up.

THIS IS THE SUMMER OF LOVE

When you’re not hitting the surf or sand this summer, tune into Network TEN for some great summer entertainment.

As a valued Partner of our Club, Network 10 have asked for our assistance to promote their new series of the Bachelor to our community, proving to be a hit among our members so far.

The Bachelor airs on Network 10 at 7.30pm, Sunday-Wednesday, or visit tenplay.com.au to see what other programs might be of interest. Who knows, maybe even some of our own members can be the next Bachelor

If you know of someone who would like to sponsor our club and be part of a inclusive and diverse volunteer movement, then please contact sponsorships@elouera.com.

Welcome to our new Office bearers:

Member Protection Information Officer - Danielle Polson
Member Protection Information Officers (MPIO) play an important role in our club. They provide information and guidance on complaints procedures and are the first point of call in the club for any enquiries, concerns or complaints about harassment, abuse or other inappropriate behaviour.

The MPIO provides information about possible ways to resolve the issue and offers moral support to the person who raises the concern or the person who is the subject of the alleged behaviour. The MPIO will treat all information as strictly confidential.

To contact please email administration@elouera.com.

Child Safe Coordinator - Kiara Summers
The Child Safe Coordinator role is the main point of contact for all communication regarding child safety and is responsible for ensuring that child-safe requirements and requests are actioned.

This includes ensuring that the club has processes in place to ensure that the Working with Children Check requirements is met in line with legislation and that the SLSA Child Safe policy 6.04 and codes of conduct around Children and Young people are adhered to.

Complaints are taken very seriously within our club and Surf Life Saving.

The Complaints Resolution Policy 6.06, Member Protection Policy 6.05 and Child Safe Policy 60.4 have been implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all SLSA members.

If you feel you have a complaint or are wary of any incident that has occurred there are procedures in place to help you. Please contact Alyson Director of Administration at administration@elouera.com and she will direct your enquiry to the relevant officer bearer.
